Illinois Institute of Technology Summer Program Invites High School Students To 'Experiment in Architecture' Workshop

CHICAGO, May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- High school students from the Chicago area or other regions have a unique summer workshop to consider, should they wish to become an architect. Chicago is known around the world for its historic and contemporary architecture. The rich tradition of Mies van der Rohe at the Illinois Institute of Technology is a large part of Chicago's architectural legacy. In July high school students will have a chance to learn about architecture and become a part of that tradition during IIT's "Experiment in Architecture" program.

"Experiment in Architecture" is designed to introduce high school students to the profession and study of architecture. The program draws upon the college of Architecture's strong combination of design, practice and technology. Students will tour Chicago to see the city's remarkable architectural achievements, attend lectures by IIT faculty, participate in discussions with local architects, and work on their own architectural ideas at IIT's computer lab.

The program introduces students to architecture, basic design, freehand drawing, model building, and computer-aided design (CAD). The workshop will teach students about architecture as a possible path for college and future professional plans, according to Stephen Sennott, Assistant Dean for Academic Affairs at IIT's College of Architecture. Part of the program explores notions of space using simple shoeboxes or other media for assignments designed by architect Araceli Garza, the long-time director of "Experiment in Architecture." After using the woodshop and multimedia tools to design their experimental space and other projects, the students hold a mini-exhibit of their work.

The first session (Crown I) is scheduled for July 8-12, the second session (Crown II) is scheduled for July 15-26. Cost is $385 for first session or $785 for the second session. The second session is a residential program. The deadline for application is June 1, 2002. Applications can be downloaded at the College of Architecture's web site.
