STUTTGART, Germany, May 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Testing Expo 2002: The SmartSim Community announced that MSC.Software (NYSE:MNS) has become the newest member of The SmartSim Community. MTS Systems Corporation (NASDAQ:MTSC), nCode International and MSC.Software will use the Testing Expo to demonstrate their full range of motion, structural, durability and NVH solutions to the automotive testing industry.

Just one year after its introduction at the 2001 SAE World Congress, The SmartSim Community, a joint product development and marketing initiative of founding members MTS Systems Corporation, nCode International and Mechanical Dynamics, Inc., reports eager market acceptance of its integrated engineering solutions for vehicle development.

The recent acquisition of Mechanical Dynamics Inc. (MDI) by MSC.Software provides a unique opportunity for The SmartSim Community to expand its simulation solutions to include the world's leading simulation software, including MSC.Nastran and MSC.Patran. MTS Chairman and CEO, Sidney W. Emery, Jr., commented, "We are pleased to welcome MSC.Software into the SmartSim Community and see this as a significant step in expanding our integrated engineering solutions for vehicle development. The MSC.Software portfolio adds an expanded selection of analysis and simulation CAE and CAD tools that build on the Community's existing Durability, Ride & Handling, and Noise, Vibration, and Harshness (NVH) capabilities."

"This represents a significant advantage to the customer in our ability to further help improve and accelerate their design process," added Brian Dabell, nCode International Chairman and CEO. "nCode has a long-established partnership with MSC.Software and has contributed its durability knowledge and fatigue technology in the joint development of the MSC.Fatigue software. Together with MSC.Software, The SmartSim Community will be able to further leverage the expertise of both nCode and MTS into a comprehensive portfolio of integrated simulation and testing tools for best-in-class durability, NVH, and ride & handling solutions while still maintaining our support of open standards."

Frank Perna, Chairman and CEO of MSC.Software stated, "MSC.Software brings almost 40 years of CAE experience to The SmartSim Community. The MSC.Software Enterprise software portfolio adds an impressive selection of analysis, durability and NVH software components to the existing SmartSim portfolio. Our business strategy is to provide tools and services that enable our customers to save time, reduce costs and ultimately make more money. Our work within The SmartSim Community gives us an opportunity to expand our working relationships with other industry leaders and increase our channels into the automotive industry."

Automakers in North America, Europe, and Asia have already endorsed The SmartSim Community concept by signing up to receive integrated engineering tools developed by member organizations. These tools -- hardware and software for physical, virtual, and analytical testing and evaluation -- dramatically accelerate the development and validation of physical and virtual prototypes. Among the auto companies currently taking advantage of The SmartSim Community co-developed tools are DaimlerChrysler and The Fraunhofer Institute for Durability (LBF), both in Germany, Mazda Motor Company in Japan, and Hyundai Motors in Korea, along with other major vehicle manufacturers.

The SmartSim Community will be exhibiting at Testing Expo 2002 (www.testing-expo.com). The Testing and Crash-test Expos and associated technical conferences will address issues such as impact dynamics, suspension kinematics, NVH and acoustics, materials, vehicle aerodynamics, and all aspects of simulation, virtual prototyping and alternatives to physical testing.

About The SmartSim Community

Created in response to the automotive industry's demand for accelerated vehicle performance evaluation, The SmartSim Community has been established to research and develop effective methods for sharing and using engineering data through integrated physical and virtual prototyping. Dedicated to use of open standards and technical collaboration, the engineering solutions developed by The SmartSim Community will assist companies in reducing the time, cost, and risk of new vehicle development. Through this collaboration between the largest suppliers of physical and virtual simulation tools in the industry The SmartSim Community will define the future of virtual and physical prototyping.
