Autodesk Geographic Information System Puts Darebin City Council On the Online Map
Australia, May 9, 2002-Autodesk*, Inc. (Nasdaq: ADSK), the world's leading design software and digital content company, today announced that Darebin City Council has implemented Autodesk's Geographic Information Systems (GIS) solution to create a topographical, location based information system for council workers and residents. The browser-based Autodesk MapGuide* application developed for Darebin City Council by Geomatic Technologies, an Autodesk System Centre, was completed in Q1 of 2002, providing Council workers with access to information and functionality relating to property, planning, assets, Council services and places of interest. The applications enable council workers to access spatial data needed for querying, reporting and presentation purposes. Dino Marino, GIS/Asset Systems Coordinator for Darebin City Council, believes the system has already delivered returns on investment in terms of time-savings. "The time normally spent on site visits has been reduced as Council employees can access all the necessary information about a particular area without leaving their desks." Darebin City Council has also demonstrated its innovation in Local Government by enabling workers in the field to access and input data to a centralized database via handheld devices. Utilising Autodesk OnSite*, council workers used the system to capture data on parking signs around the city and will be adding further details such as road signs and street furniture later this year. The Council expanded this system using Autodesk Map*, allowing staff to capture and maintain information on the City's drainage infrastructure to which all employees have access either in the office via Autodesk Mapguide* or in the field using Autodesk Onsite*. The system contains GIS gathered data to ensure Council has an accurate database of drainage outlets, fixtures and maintenance problems. In addition, the system has been extended to provide Darebin residents with permanent access to GIS-based local information via the web. With access to maps of public facilities such as schools, libraries, halls and places of recreation, locals can search for details such as opening times and services provided. Local businesses benefit too, with real-time access to zoning information for building and development purposes. Maps which visually display particulars such as garbage collection details, speed limits, parking times, waste/recycling collection and street cleaning times are now available to local residents online and to Council employees on their intranet. Andr Pravaz, Autodesk Regional Director for the South East Asia Pacific, said, "Darebin City Council is one of the first cities in Australia to utilise GIS solutions in the field and integrate that information into online geo-referenced maps. Allowing both council workers and local residents access to the end result is a prime example of Autodesk technology delivering practical GIS solutions."
