Perceptron Awarded $2 Million in 3D Scanning Business With Japanese Automakers During the Past Year

PLYMOUTH, Mich., April 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Perceptron, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRCP) today announced that during the past four fiscal quarters it has been awarded $2 million in contracts with five Japanese automakers to supply its new ScanWorks(TM) 3D scanning systems. Toyota, Mazda, Honda, Mitsubishi and Nissan have all taken delivery of these systems during that period.

ScanWorks software and scanning sensor technology form the basis of a powerful tool that reduces development time and improves product quality by providing rapid access to 3D shape and contour information. ScanWorks serves a wide variety of industrial applications, including scanning the shape of prototype stamped parts and welded assemblies for comparison to their CAD models. ScanWorks scan data is also being used to design dies and molds that produce parts less likely to deform during the assembly process.

These Perceptron systems have been adopted because of their speed and accuracy. Combined with the mobility of a portable CMM arm, the systems enable precise 3D scanning to be performed in environments from the development laboratory to the factory floor, all at a very affordable price.
Known for their innovation, the Japanese automakers are among the earliest adopters of the 3D scanning systems. "Over eighty Perceptron scanning systems have been sold in the Japanese market, with the majority going to Toyota and Toyota group companies," says Bill Corriveau, senior vice president at Perceptron.

The five Japanese automakers purchased portable 3D scanning systems through Perceptron's distribution channel in the Japanese market. Perceptron provides its ScanWorks systems to Kosaka Laboratory in Japan who in turn integrates them with a Vectoron(TM) portable CMM arm system. Tokyo Boeki, an exclusive distributor of the Vectoron arms to automotive customers, offers these complete 3D scanning solutions for sale.

"The rapid adoption of our ScanWorks systems by Toyota and other Japanese automakers is very encouraging," continues Corriveau. "It demonstrates the compelling value these companies are obtaining in both the product development and the production environments."
