EDS Offers E-factory Suite of Tools to PACE InstitutionsExpanded offering from EDS PLM Solutions provides students with the improved ability to create, analyze and improve design communication of factory layout.
PLANO, Texas - EDS reported today the availability of its E-factory suite of software for all academic institutions belonging to the Partners for the Advancement of CAD/CAM/CAE Education (PACE) program. With the E-factory software from EDS PLM Solutions, students at PACE institutions will now have access to the same software General Motors engineers use to quickly create accurate 3D factory layout models, effectively analyze factory layouts for material handling efficiency, and deliver 3D factory layout views to improve design communication. "Access to these digital tools allows us to provide realistic environments for our classes and team projects," said Robert Mitchell, dean of engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla, a PACE institution since 2000. "We can now collaborate with university and industry partners on interesting and relevant educational experiences. It's no wonder our student interest in manufacturing is growing rapidly." "Since its inception, PACE has provided product development software to participating institutions," said Jerry Elson, vice president and general manager of GM's Vehicle Operations. "With EDS' additional contribution of the E-factory solutions, the PACE Institutions will now be able to better teach, and conduct research on, computer-aided manufacturing topics. They can simulate the factory floor, study ergonomics through math-based tools, and collaborate with GM on projects that utilize the identical tools that we use in manufacturing our products." E-factory delivers a robust family of solutions that enables enterprises to manage pre-production manufacturing information by associating product, process, plant and resource definitions through integral process planning and a range of digital manufacturing applications. The suite includes the following E-factory products: Factory CAD, Factory Flow, Factory View, Jack and the associated toolkits for Motion Capture Occupant Packaging and Task Analysis. "By using the E-factory software, students will gain valuable experience with digital manufacturing tools," said Ted McFadden, vice president of manufacturing planning at EDS PLM Solutions. "These are the same world-class tools that are providing significant benefits to our customers, including the world's largest manufacturers." PACE is a network for collaboration between GM, EDS, Sun Microsystems, and selected academic institutions worldwide. In addition to the E-factory software suite, EDS PLM Solutions also provides PACE Institutions with Unigraphics, Teamcenter(tm) Engineering and Solid Edge software. PACE was formed in 1999 to help provide future engineers from selected institutions the education and experience desired by each of the partnering corporations. PACE creates networks for student projects, research, curriculum development, textbook development and other forms of collaboration between GM, Sun Microsystems, EDS and academia. In addition to the hardware, software and training donated by the three core partners, PACE institutions receive a substantial contribution of ADAMS (Automatic Dynamic Analysis of Mechanical Systems) software from Mechanical Dynamics, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Mich. PACE has made donations to universities in the United States, Canada and Mexico including: Michigan State University, Michigan Technological University, University of Missouri-Rolla, Tuskegee University, Kettering University, Northwestern University, Prairie View A&M University, Virginia Tech, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, Queen's University, Instituto Politecnico Nacional, the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey (Toluca, Monterrey, and Mexico City Campuses), Universidad Iberoamericana and the Instituto Tecnologico Autonomo de Mexico (ITAM). The total value of these donations to date is more than $1 billion.
