Napier University Opts for ESysPDM As a Teaching Tool
5 April 2002 -- Napier University (Edinburgh, UK) has chosen Enabled Systems' ESysPDM as the primary software tool for its Collaborative Engineering teaching program. Using ESysPDM means that students can now have experience of collaborative engineering projects using a fully functional Product Data Management (PDM) system. Napier University's School of Engineering has implemented Enabled Systems' new entry-level PDM system, ESysPDM to enhance their postgraduate collaborative engineering program. The School of Engineering, which was awarded a high grade in the recent Research Assessment Exercise - the UK Government's evaluation of universities' research performance, has featured Product Data Management in its postgraduate curriculum since the early 1990s. Collaborative engineering is an area of engineering practice which has often been neglected by university engineering departments. Part of the reason for this is the cost of purchasing and implementing the necessary software. Whereas CAD software such as Autodesk AutoCAD is widely available, easy to use, and comes with attractive academic discounts, PDM solutions have often been aimed at large enterprises. Angela Benzies of Napier University School of Engineering said "I believe that universities could do more to make PDM technology more widely understood by industry, and to provide graduates who have PDM knowledge. Having ESysPDM will facilitate students gaining valuable practical experience to supplement their theoretical knowledge." Napier has taken advantage of Enabled Systems academic licensing scheme which provides a full development licence for 4000 (plus 85% discount on ESysPDM components). In addition to the low purchase cost, ESysPDM offers the advantage of minimal implementation costs with its out-of-the-box simplicity. ESysPDM provides a radical solution to the PDM needs of organisations such as SMEs and academic institutions by offering full PDM functionality which can be implemented by anyone with basic IT skills. With ESysPDM implemented, students at Napier University can now get hands on experience of PDM functionalities such as: document version control, comprehensive part/document search facilities, part structure management, Bill of Materials Management, part/document classification, part/document revision history, part/document life cycle management and much more. Dr Doug Brady, Managing Director of Enabled Systems Ltd. said: "We are delighted that Napier University have chosen ESysPDM and feel sure it will provide an excellent head start for students when they start their engineering careers" He added: "The simplicity of use and low cost proved the deciding factor for Napier as it has for many SMEs."
