Kitchener, ON, March 25, 2002 - Spicer Corporation today announced the release of ViewCafe 2.1 featuring new symbol and banner tools as well as an enhanced printing capability that accelerates Java-based printing performance by up to 85% for some files such as large format engineering documents.

Powered by Java 2 and Java 3D technology, ViewCafe lets users conduct document view, markup, and collaborative review sessions for over 150 file formats such as CAD, vector, raster, hybrid and office files including MS Word, Excel and Adobe PDF through an easy-to-use and configurable browser-based interface. Recently, ViewCafe also introduced 3D CAD model viewing and manipulation capabilities for IGES, STL, VRML, and XGL/ZGL formats - making it among the first to offer Java2-enabled 3D model viewing on the Web in a 100% pure Java applet for complete client-side, platform-independent functionality.

New features for ViewCafe 2.1 include:

Custom Symbol Tool - Users can define customized symbols that are displayed in a thumbnail-style symbols library. To use this function, a user simply clicks the symbols tool, selects the appropriate symbol from the window, and applies it to the document.

Extended Banner Support - ISO-compliant banners can now be placed outside of the document boundaries and users can specify a fixed-point size for banner text that will not resize as users magnify and reduce a document.

Accelerated Printing Performance - ViewCafe 2.1 includes a new Rasterize on Print function that significantly reduces the time required to print sizable documents such as large-format engineering drawings.

API Enhancements - Streamlined API calls have resulted in easier and more efficient integration to document management systems as well as faster response when the user requests to view documents.

"Much of what we implemented in ViewCafe 2.1 is the result of listening to the needs of the markets we serve and the needs of our partners," said Shamir Somani, Product Marketing Manager at Spicer. "One of Spicer's key objectives for ViewCafe is to achieve the optimum mix of functionality and robust server-based performance to enable any enterprise to quickly and reliably review documents online with project teams and business partners in a collaborative fashion."

ViewCafe is interoperable with other Spicer Enterprise Viewing Solutions, and can display markups created in Imagenation and Image aX. This interoperability gives IS managers the flexibility to deploy a combination of Spicer viewing products to meet the specific needs of each user while carefully considering such critical issues as functionality, budgets, and security.

ViewCafe's architecture is fully scalable and administrators can quickly handle increases in usage by simply adding core servers. With several core servers operating, ViewCafe efficiently performs load sharing and balances the workload among all servers ensuring that users can quickly access the documents they need.
