EDS Unveils Innovations to Solid Edge Computer-Aided Design SoftwareNew Solid Edge Insight Web components, which leverage the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server, expand knowledge sharing from engineering to non-engineering groups, increasing overall productivity
NATIONAL DESIGN ENGINEERING SHOW, CHICAGO - EDS today announced an expansion of the Insight design management technology embedded within its Solid Edge computer-aided design (CAD) software. With a series of new Web components, Solid Edge software from EDS PLM Solutions will allow non-engineering users to access and view current product information via Internet Explorer. For the first time with Solid Edge, shop floor employees can view the latest revision of a drawing or 3D model from a web link (URL) distributed via e-mail; sales representatives can show potential clients new products using fast web search to display 3D views and product information; and suppliers can view a BOM over the web in order to stock the correct quantity and type of parts. EDS made the announcement in conjunction with the National Design Engineering Show in Chicago, March 18-21, 2002. "Our guiding principle with Solid Edge has been to deliver innovative functionality that enhances the productivity of mechanical design professionals," said Dan Staples, strategic planning director for Solid Edge, EDS PLM Solutions. "With these new enhancements more people than ever can take advantage of Solid Edge Insight technology." The new capabilities augment the Solid Edge Insight technology that provides data vaulting, revision management, engineering change orders, and Bill of Material (BOM) management to help companies share engineering knowledge. Solid Edge Insight also manages all types of data used in the design process including Word-based documents describing design requirements, legacy drawings and image files used for design review. Extending SharePoint Portal Server Technology to Manage Product Structure Solid Edge Insight leverages the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server. In addition to an extensible portal interface and powerful enterprise search engine, the Server provides mainstream document management tools such as version management, file locking (check-in/check-out), document profiling and role-based access. "Solid Edge development is to be applauded for its early version of providing an elegant yet powerful design data management solution built on the promising future we expect for SharePoint Portal Server," said Gytis Barzdukas, group product manager for the Business Portal Group, Microsoft. "Already, information technology leaders and manufacturers such as TOA Electronics and Anderson Power Products are adopting SharePoint Portal as their portal solution, and we expect many new customers who also use Solid Edge will benefit even further." The Web components further expand the unique Solid Edge extensions - Secure Links and Smart Sync - to SharePoint. Secure Links manage complex relationships among design documents, even in multiple-level assemblies with thousands of components. When designers of CAE system managers change file names, create new files, or move files to another location, Insight's Secure Link feature automatically tracks the changes and preserves the file links. Smart Sync improves system response and performance in a network environment. All relevant product data can be downloaded to a local disk where design modifications can be made using local workstation computing power. When designers complete work and close files, changes are automatically made Insight's value, and all property information is synchronized to reflect the changes. When users re-open assemblies, only the changed files are downloaded to the local drive, once again increasing performance.
