March 16 2002 -- Two high school robotic design teams using Solid Edge from EDS PLM Solutions captured first place this week at the Lone Star Regional competition in Houston, Texas. The Daimler/Chrysler-sponsored teams were represented by students from Bob Jones and Butler high schools in Madison County, Ala.

The FIRST competition takes place every spring across the United States. FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a non-profit organization founded in 1989 to inspire students to become interested and involved in science and technology. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a corporate- and community-sponsored annual design competition that partners students with professional mentors in a super-charged engineering challenge.

Solid Edge computer-aided design (CAD) software is used by dozens of high school teams across the nation to design these impressive robots.

The next regional event for the Alabama team is in St. Louis April 5-7. That is followed by the national competition in Orlando, Fla., April 24-27.
