Cities Revealed Launches Revolutionary Building Database

4 March 2002 - The GeoInformation® Group, publishers of Cities Revealed® aerial photography, is pleased to announce the availability of a revolutionary new building database offering information on the age and structure of every residential building within the London area.

CR Building Class is the first database of its kind within the UK market, providing a more detailed understanding of the urban environment. The database offers 83 residential building categories defined by age, ranging from Victorian to modern day housing, and structure, ranging from bungalows to tower blocks, which will enable professionals to accurately identify and target specific housing types with a click of a button.

What's more, this compelling database can help to enhance consumer classifications and lifestyle databases to define the real potential for marketing and planning operations. It will also prove an essential tool for those involved in building development, demographic analysis, retail mapping, store location, direct marketing, emergency services and urban capacity applications by enabling modelling to proceed at the individual building level.

The data has been collected via a high-resolution aerial survey acquisition programme recently launched by The GeoInformation Group. The air surveys, which were flown at 1:5000 - 1:7000 scale, resulted in 12.5 cm resolution digital ortho-databases which is unprecedented detail for UK urban areas.

The GeoInformation Group's co-founder and Commercial Director, Dr Alun Jones, comments, "This impressive new product provides the first ever comprehensive and reliable statistical resource of every dwelling within a city from which users can undertake extensive demographic and building analysis". He continues, "The beauty of this database is that it can be used either in isolation or in combination with other databases and represents a very new and unique view of our urban environment".

The versatility of CR Building Class is accentuated through the number of standard formats in which the data is supplied including DXF, ESRI's Shape and MapInfo's Tab formats, as well as the ease with which it can be combined with other mapping and geo-demographic data sets.

A further added benefit is the option for these building data to be linked and easily integrated with the Ordnance Survey's recently released MasterMap product.

CR Building Class databases are currently available for the London areas with Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham datasets to follow shortly. Further information on database availability and on the full range of The GeoInformation Group's geospatial products can be found at www.crworld.co.uk or by phoning +44 1223 425325.
