CRWorld Training Raises GIS Awareness Within the Crown Estate
28 February 2002 - CRWorld Training Solutions, the training arm of The GeoInformation Group, recently conducted a GIS awareness seminar for five senior members of staff at the Crown Estate. With the current implementation of a corporate-wide GIS, it was deemed necessary to raise awareness and highlight the different capabilities of GIS to senior managers within the organisation. Recognising the specific training requirements of the client, CRWorld Training Solutions provided the Crown Estate with a flexible solution by enabling them to tailor a one-day seminar to the professional development needs of their managers. The course, conducted at the client's offices, was specifically designed to concentrate on GIS theory and concepts with an emphasis on practical exercises. By using their own spatial information the delegates could easily relate familiar data with the practical exercises set. The GIS, once implemented, will be used as a decision making aid and management tool across the Crown Estate. All the data concerning their UK land holdings that are currently held in paper files and record maps are being transferred into digital format and then loaded into ESRI's ArcView. The intention is to then link external databases into the GIS to enable users to view information from a range of sources within the Crown Estate. The feedback post training has been very positive. Bruna Catena, Lead GIS Developer at Crown Estates who initiated the course, commented "Many managers have come away from the course with new enthusiasm for the GIS implementation as they now understand how useful GIS is as a management tool. This has been one of the hardest things to get across to senior managers - that GIS isn't just about making maps!"
