HUNTSVILLE, Ala., Feb. 4, 2002 - GIStec GmbH (Darmstadt, Germany) and IntelliWhere(TM), a division of Intergraph Mapping and GIS Solutions, have announced a cooperative partnership to address new opportunities in the European location-based services (LBS) market. The companies will develop innovative applications for both consumer and business in the areas of information services, mobile workforce management, tracking services, and emergency services.

IntelliWhere will support the partnership using IntelliWhere LocationServer as the server-side software platform. It delivers location-based maps and text results in open Extensible Markup Language (XML) and industry-standard formats. Because IntelliWhere LocationServer is device and data independent, it is a flexible LBS solution for fast and easy data transfer.

GIStec, a Team GeoMedia Registered Solutions Provider, is establishing an infrastructure with several host servers and will act as a service provider to customers who want to offer mobile information services, especially in
the event sector. For example, sponsors of large public events such as festivals and music concerts can provide key information to attendees about entertainment timetables, routing and parking, information and merchandise kiosks, and so forth.

City information system first cooperative solution IntelliWhere and GIStec currently have under development a city information system for Darmstadt. The system provides online and mobile access to key business and cultural information, including business hours of city facilities and authorities, doctors, restaurants, and area shopping centers. Timetables of public transport systems and theater and cinema programs are also available, providing a broad range of information to citizens and visitors.

The system also demonstrates the capability to deliver "in-house" information on mobile devices. For example, when entering large buildings such as the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research, where GIStec is located, finding departments and offices may not be easy. The city information system provides routing information to make destinations within a building easier to locate.

Overall, the city information system helps ensure a uniform method for delivering information to Darmstadt city employees and citizens and will serve as the basis for further developments such as emergency operations support.

"The transfer of geographical data such as aerial photographs or real estate information to mobile devices requires flexible, configurable software and a high degree of technology," explains Joachim Hahn, division manager of IntelliWhere Germany. "We believe the market has been lacking quality and innovative services to meet this need. IntelliWhere LocationServer closes this gap as a reliable software platform with solid capabilities and is available today for commercial use."

Dr. Uwe Jasnoch, manager of GIStec, adds, "Nowadays, there are enormous changes in the field of GIS and its productive use. These changes can be seen especially in the fast-growing location-based services sector. The cooperation of GIStec and IntelliWhere allows the systematic development of solutions and services for this market."

GIStec GmbH

GIStec GmbH is a spin-off company of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research ("Fraunhofer-IGD"). GIStec was founded in April 2001 and concentrates on transferring, using, and integrating the results of research in the field of geo-science to a commercial range of products and services. These products and services range from metadata and geo-data servers to "GIS-based Location Services (GLS)."

One key feature of GIStec is its independence of any specific hardware or software provider. In addition to cooperation with IntelliWhere, GIStec also represents and is closely tied with the INI-GraphicsNet, the International Network of Graphical Data Processing, which consists of the Fraunhofer Institute for Computer Graphics Research, the Computer Graphics Center, and the Technical University of Darmstadt's Graphical Interactive Systems department. GIStec is also associated with all of the other INI-GraphicsNet's national and international members.
