Kyoto University Selects EDS Product Lifecycle Management Software For Mechanical Design AutomationJapan's Kyoto University Will Deploy 100 Seats of Solid Edge* to Support itsDigital Engineering Learning Environment
PLANO, Texas 25 January 2002 - EDS today announced that the Faculty of Engineering, Kyoto University, one of Japan's leading educational institutions, has selected product lifecycle management (PLM) software from EDS PLM Solutions to support its mechanical design automation curriculum. Kyoto University will deploy 100 seats of Solid Edge*, the leading mid-range mechanical computer-aided design (MCAD) system, within its digital engineering learning environment. The Faculty of Engineering is completing its vision of a practical design room, appropriately called the "Creativity Room." The Creativity Room will have well integrated solutions for computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided engineering (CAE), and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). Solid Edge will be a primary offering within this environment."Our students have a very high interest and expectation for 3D CAD education at Kyoto University," said Dr. Atsushi Matsubara, associate professor at the Department of Precision Engineering within the Faculty. "They also have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and a great enthusiasm to master new technology in a very short time frame. Solid Edge has great modeling and assembling capabilities, and coupled with its ease of learning, Solid Edge will significantly benefit all of our engineering programs."Kyoto University had a variety of CAD systems before Solid Edge was selected as the for its 120 junior mechanical engineering students. The students' expectations and interest in mechanical design software systems have been increasing in recent years. As a result, the Faculty of Engineering decided to install a large number of 3D CAD systems to provide opportunities for many students to gain experience and to elevate 3D CAD education as an essential part of a complete digital engineering learning environment. Solid Edge met the stringent requirements set forth by the faculty, and its ease of learning will enable students to quickly become proficient in the use of this technology.About Kyoto University Founded in 1897, Kyoto University celebrated its centennial in 1997. The University has produced four Nobel laureates, which is the highest from any Japanese university and ranks highly among research universities throughout the world. With its ten faculties, fourteen graduate schools, thirteen affiliated research institutes, and seventeen research and educational centers, it is the second largest national university in Japan. Its scale can be understood from the fact that it has 13,900 undergraduate students, 7,800 graduate students, including about 1,100 from other countries, 2,800 teachers and 2,500 administrative staff.Kyoto University adopts a fresh and flexible approach to education and research, a dynamic that arises from the traditional spirit of Kyoto University's academic freedom, cultivated throughout the University's one hundred-year history.Kyoto University is widely recognized as offering the highest quality of education and research in Japan. International activities are flourishing. Kyoto University faculty members participate frequently in overseas research, conferences and meetings and more than 1,500 overseas researchers visit Kyoto University each year.www.kyoto-u.ac.jp/index-e.html About Solid Edge Solid Edge from EDS is powerful, 3D computer-aided design (CAD) software that can reduce manufacturing companies' time to market by an achievable 50 percent.
