KITCHENER, ON - December 10, 2001 - Spicer Corporation, a world leader in developing interoperable document viewing, markup, editing and scanning software, introduces new Java thin client 3D CAD model viewing and manipulation capabilities in ViewCafe 2.0.

Powered by Java 2 and Java 3D technology, ViewCafe 2.0 gives users the ability to view and manipulate 3D CAD models such as IGES, STL, VRML, and XGL/ZGL in addition to viewing and markup capabilities for over 150 CAD, vector, raster and office formats. Java 3D offers the most robust and well rounded 3D rendering API available to deliver cross-platform, high quality 3D graphics for the networked, collaborative enterprise. Moreover, ViewCafe's client-side Java components and server-side components are compatible with Microsoft's new Windows XP operating system.

Java 3D complements ViewCafe's existing Java 2 architecture to create a pure Java applet that benefits from high security, robust client communications, and outstanding 3D rendering capabilities. Users require only a standard Java-2-enabled Web browser such as Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer to view and markup documents online. Administrators can also choose to deploy ViewCafe as a Java Bean or application independently of the Web browser.

"We've incorporated a number of leading Web technologies into ViewCafe suchas Java 2, Java 3D, XML, and XGL/ZGL," said Shamir Somani, ViewCafe product manager. "Many businesses have standardized their own Web-based solutions on these technologies and actively participate in their continued development. This common technology platform is the cornerstone of Spicer'sWeb development strategy. It means that ViewCafe can offer our customers rapid integration and optimum performance within their own systems, while also leaving plenty of growing room for future advances in these standardized technologies."

In addition to 3D model viewing and manipulation capabilities, ViewCafe adds several features including:

  • New File format support for AutoCAD 2002, Gerber RS 274-D and RS 274-X, Cadra 11, SVG, and Microsoft XP Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents. Support has been enhanced for RTL and Adobe PDF formats.
  • New Text Search Tool enabling users to locate text in such documents as CAD, plotter and office files.
  • New Languages. ViewCafe now offers 11 languages including English, Italian, German, Spanish, French, Finnish, Traditional Chinese (Mandarin), Cantonese, Simplified Chinese, Japanese, and Korean.

As part of Spicer's suite of Enterprise Visualization Solutions, ViewCafe'sXML-based markups can be viewed in Spicer Imagenation or Image a. X for a high level of interoperability among Spicer products.

Fully scalable, ViewCafe can handle virtually an unlimited number of users. As usage increases, system administrators simply add core servers to handle the greater workload. ViewCafe's application server distributes the workload evenly over all core servers ensuring that all users benefit from optimum server response.

ViewCafe is available with several flexible pricing models including fixed concurrent pricing, OEM pricing and ASP/portal pricing. Administrators alsohave a choice between deploying the 2D or the 2D/3D applet according to which is most suitable for their business processes.
