Open CASCADE Wins a Major Order from Usinor for the Development of a Strategic New Simulation ApplicationThe application is based on open-source 3D modeling components from Open CASCADE and is supported by a multi-year contract for development services
PARIS - October 29, 2001 - The Open CASCADE Company today announced that Usinor, worldwide leader in the steel industry for net sales and third-ranked producer of crude steel, has placed its confidence in the Open CASCADE company for the development of a strategic application in the analysis domain. Usinor called on the Open CASCADE development team to execute preliminary studies, draw up the appropriate specifications and carry out development of the application. The application is based on the Open CASCADE 3D modeling components. According to Pascal Ravier, project manager for the Automotive Steel Solution Design Department of Research and Development of Usinor, "We are very impressed with the professionalism of the Open CASCADE team. They approached development in a way that allowed us to double our efficiency and save considerable time on the overall project, while preparing specifications that would ensure optimal application performance." With this new application, Usinor confirms its confidence in the benefits and reliability of the open-source development model as practiced by Open CASCADE. The Open CASCADE components are freely available to the worldwide developer community at http://www.opencascade.com and are an important open-source tool for the creation of technical and scientific applications for industry, software editors and research. Four Open CASCADE components are key elements of the Usinor applicationScheduled for release later this year, the new Usinor application was built around four essential Open CASCADE components:
As part of their services offer, the Open CASCADE development team also linked the Open CASCADE components with an open-source graphical interface chosen by Usinor. About Open CASCADE ServicesOpen CASCADE is the leading open-source tool for 3D modeling worldwide and is used for the development of trade-specific technical and scientific applications ranging from mechanical CAD/CAM/CAE to AEC (Architecture, Engineering and Construction) and GIS (Geographical Information Systems). The Open CASCADE business model is based on providing specific developments for industrial customers and services to software editors and on commercializing a broad range of services around the certified Open CASCADE version. These value-added services aim to bring about the optimal implementation of the user's development project and include on-site and online training, technical assistance and support packages that provide 12 months of coverage for different types of customer needs. Customers can also order personalized project follow-up and expert consulting. The Open CASCADE Company is an independent subsidiary of EADS Matra Datavision. Open CASCADE is a registered trademark of the Open CASCADE company. About Open CASCADE Certified Version 3.1Certified Version 3.1 of Open CASCADE includes C++ components for the modeling data structure, modeling algorithms, visualization, data exchange, an application framework, and foundation classes, as well as the automatically configured WOK development environment. WOK allows groups of developers to work simultaneously on different products and optimizes utilization of the Open CASCADE components. This new version of Open CASCADE also includes Visual C++ projects that enable Windows users to compile Open CASCADE code for their platforms. In addition, export file formats are now available for STL, VRML and HPGL2, and the Open CASCADE Application Framework for rapid development of domain-specific design applications offers increased reliability. Open CASCADE version 3.1 runs on Linux Mandrake and Red Hat, Windows and Sun Solaris platforms.
