LOS ANGELES, California - October 25, 2001 - Structural Research & Analysis Corp. (SRAC), developer of the COSMOS/ suite of design analysis products, today announced that the University of Texas has incorporated 40 seats of COSMOS/Works as part of several start-up projects focusing on PROject Centered Engineering EDucation (PROCEED) activities in the school's Mechanical Engineering department.

COSMOS/Works will be used in the freshman Engineering Graphics course, where SolidWorks has already been implemented. Approximately 500 students, majoring in Mechanical, Aerospace, and Civil Engineering, enroll in this course each year. According to Professor Ronald Barr, "Our overall project goal is to 'Modularize the Graphics Curriculum' into natural flowing elements of learning materials. Our curriculum focuses on Concurrent Engineering, which is to relate to the students all graphical activities that can emanate from a 3-D Solid Model geometric data base."

Their goal is to demonstrate the new digital engineering process at an early time when entering the program. To convey the proper usage of COSMOS/Works, the students will build a piston head assembly. Pressure will then be applied to the head of the piston and FEA will be used to show the distribution of stresses in the assembly. This project is one of several headed up by the Mechanical Engineering department as a result of an initial grant by Ford Motor Company to provide more hands-on experience for their engineering students.

"We want to give students real-world design experience so they can compete effectively in the engineering job market," said Suchit Jain, SRAC's Vice President of Marketing. "Because of its ease of use and close integration with SolidWorks, COSMOS/Works is an ideal choice to teach these future engineers the benefits of utilizing analysis throughout the design cycle."
