Improves Biopharm Detail Design and Cuts Asset Management Costs

PHILADELPHIA, Oct. 3, 2001- The Process & Building Solutions division of Intergraph Corporation <Nasdaq: INGR> announced an update to its flagship Plant Design System (PDS(tm)) software, featuring expanded capabilities for design of biochemical and pharmaceutical plants. The update includes biopharm piping specifications; supports 3D modeling and isometric extraction of multiport valves and related biopharm components; and integrates with Intergraph data, document and materials management software.

Biopharm plant architectural design modeling is also supported through integration in the PDS release, scheduled early fourth quarter. The PDS biopharm update helps reduce time-to-market for new or reformulated products and is especially suited for fast track, modular designs and global engineering. The combination of the biopharm update, integrated software and related services further extend PDS as an effective business solution for plant owners and engineering firms operating in the biochemical and pharmaceutical markets. Through integration with Intergraph plant information and materials management software including Notia(tm), Directa and MARIAN(tm), the release lowers the cost of compliance with FDA regulations and speeds procurement of plant piping and materials.

Delivers ASME BPE Piping Specification

The release delivers full piping specifications containing standard ASME BioProcessing Equipment (BPE) fittings. The comprehensive spec includes all dimensional and graphic symbol definition in EDEN modules for welded and clamped pipe and tube fittings. The piping data ensures designs are consistent and driven from a single, industry standard specification including dimensions, materials joining, seals and other attributes specific to biopharmaceutical plant designs. The comprehensive spec reflects the ASME BPE 1997 standards and requirements.

Supports Multiport Valve Modeling, Drawing Extraction

The PDS update supports multiport valves, fittings and manifolds. Compliant with the Alias Limited Industrial Software Products specification for multiport components, the release supports isometric extraction by ISOGEN of complex valve and pipe geometries common to biopharm plant models. Isometric drawings extracted from the 3D model provide accurate representations that do not require post-extraction modification. Models of typical biopharm valves and fittings from major vendors are also included. Use of the example models saves cost and effort, since designers need not expend valuable modeling time to create these special items.

Improves Regulatory Compliance, Materials Procurement

Integration with the Intergraph Notia and Directa data and document management software helps ensure FDA regulatory compliance for plant start up and operation as well as expansion and revamp projects. Notia integration helps plant owners as well as engineering companies or departments to store, manage, access and re-use engineering data and as-built information. A Web interface provides regulatory inspectors, plant managers and other authorized personnel efficient access to crucial design and operating data.

For example, if revised sanitary specifications call for replacement of certain fittings, Notia enables engineers to locate the components in the model, plan the replacement and minimize production shutdown. Specifically addressing the needs of plant and other personnel, the Directa electronic document management software provides storage, markup and retrieval for biopharm plant documents and drawings.

The PDS biopharm update also integrates with the Intergraph MARIAN materials management software. Linked with PDS and populated by the ASME BPE or other industry bulk specifications, MARIAN drives the procurement process. MARIAN handles materials standardization, bills of material and requisitions, procurement functions, fabrication tracking and site tasks including simulation, warehousing and disposition. MARIAN also allows users to share materials data with line-of-business systems, contractors and suppliers.

With the MARIAN Spec Loader, users can develop and maintain existing or develop additional specs and load them easily into PDS. The Spec Loader reduces the time required for specification development, maintenance and import with tools that streamline the process.

Supports Architectural Design Aspects

To support the specialized architectural requirements of biopharmaceutical plant buildings, PDS integrates with the AEC DesignWare Inc. Project Architect Plus 7.0, the plan-based 3D design software. Integration provides automatic wall penetrations for piping and users can interrogate the building and plant models to check for interferences. PDS interference detection ensures proper cutout location and shape to accommodate piping, electrical, control, process equipment and HVAC components. The PDS and Project Architect Plus integration helps reduce rework and increases overall design accuracy and completeness. Future Project Architect Plus releases are planned to include automatic penetration for equipment, HVAC and electrical objects in floors and ceilings.
