October 2, 2001 - London - The designs for the Stephen Lawrence Technocentre were today unveiled to the public. The event, held at the Groucho Club in London, marks the first public presentation of the designs for this important construction project. The building has been designed in memorial to Stephen Lawrence who had wanted to become an architect and completed his work placement at Timothy Associates Ltd, the architects who have undertaken the design of the building.

The event, hosted by Revit Technology Ltd, was attended by members of the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust, as well as industry leaders and members of the press. The scheme design was presented by Erica Timothy, Director at Timothy Associates and Sarah Capes, Client Services Architect, Revit Technology Ltd, who took attendees through the project from concept to scheme design. The Technocentre has received widespread support from the highest levels, including HRH Prince Charles, the Prime Minister, the President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and the TUC, as well as significant local support.

The Trust was established in 1998 by the Lawrence family as a living legacy to Stephen with the aim of helping bright but disadvantaged young people to achieve their goals in architecture and related design professions. The Trust currently provides scholarships and bursaries in the UK, Jamaica and South Africa. The project was conceived by Arthur Timothy, an architect who acted as a mentor to Stephen during his work experience at Timothy Associates.

"The Technocentre combines quality architecture with opportunities for the development of the local community. It has the potential to become both an architectural and social icon in the regeneration of Deptford," commented Andy Clarke, Chief Executive, Lewisham challenge partnership.

The Technocentre will be a centre of excellence for students interested in pursuing further education in architecture and related environmental design fields. The building, spanning 8 floors, will include teaching rooms, meeting rooms/lecture theatre, an IT suite/learning resource centre (with a small specialised library), offices for architectural practices, exhibition/function areas, a caf and a crche, and will house the offices for the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust.

The project is being funded by a number of agencies including the Millennium Commission who are contributing 4.4 Million of Lottery Funding and the Arts Council of England who will provide 1 Million towards the 9.2 Million capital costs. The LDA (London Development Agency) is considering a significant contribution, and further contributions are being negotiated

with a number of major building component companies. Revit Technology has agreed to provide its parametric building modeller, free of charge, to all workstations for the benefit of the students at the Technocentre.

To promote the Technocentre's design orientated environment, the creation of a landmark structure was of the utmost importance. In view of a late change to the site location and modifications to the brief for the building, Timothy Associates needed to redesign the building in a short space of time. To achieve this the architects utilised the advanced architectural design capabilities of Revit, the first parametric building modeller for the AEC industry. "Revit's functionality and ease of use allowed us to redesign the building from the ground up in the shortest possible time. We were under pressure to prepare a new design and Revit's parametric modelling system made this possible," commented Erica Timothy, Director, Timothy Associates.

"With the assistance of Revit we were able to create a striking, sculptural design."

"It was especially fulfilling for both myself and Revit Technology to become partners with Timothy Associates in this momentous project," commented Sarah Capes, Client Services Architect, Revit Technology Ltd. "We have always been strong believers in the importance of providing proactive consultation along with our parametric building technology and through this value added service we were able to help accelerate the design of this compelling memorial."
