New Version Emphasizes Plant Operations Support

HOUSTON - September 10, 2001 - The Process & Building Solutions division of Intergraph Corporation is shipping the new 5.2 version of INtools instrumentation engineering software. The company's instrumentation specialists are demonstrating the software in Booth 1345 at the ISA 2001 Instrumentation, Systems and Automation Conference and Exhibition.

INtools 5.2 includes more than 130 improvements to all 10 modules, including automation features for expanded operations and maintenance support and for reduced engineering hours. Enhanced SmartLoop features improve communication value of loop diagrams and Wiring and Calibration module changes support daily instrumentation engineering and plant maintenance activities. Miscellaneous upgrades range from interface improvements for greater usability and extended input fields for more detailed reference data to alternative flow coefficients for control valve calculations.

Enhanced SmartLoop Improves Communication Value

To help engineers improve the communication value of loop diagrams, the Enhanced SmartLoop feature now includes attribute and annotation SmartText, custom background sheets, shared symbols and fieldbus segment support. Using SmartText, engineers can place and save instrument attributes, such as differential pressure or manufacturer, on the Enhanced SmartLoop display. Users can annotate loops to clarify designs or identify changes. Applying and saving SmartText helps engineers refine designs or communicate changes. Users can also specify the size and orientation of a custom background sheet to suit company or client work practices. Several pre-defined background sheets are provided.

The shared symbols feature enables administrators to define a location for Enhanced SmartLoop symbols available to all users, which ensures that only one version of the symbol set is accessed to promote consistency. Enhanced SmartLoop features the display and editing of segment wiring and fieldbus loops, an expansion of the fieldbus support introduced in the previous version of INtools.

The data-centric Enhanced SmartLoop feature provides on-the-fly generation of editable, non-CAD loop views. The underlying data is updated when users make changes to the loop.

Calibration Module Meets Operational Needs

To support daily plant operation, the Calibration module provides enhancement to the As-found/As-left function, three ways to calculate loop error and calibration test equipment definition. The improvements increase the value and plant life cycle usability of instrumentation data, contributing toward a more complete and detailed history for each new or existing operating instrument. Users can define, modify and view As-found and As-left values in different columns, which enables INtools to automatically generate separate calibration results for the respective values. Loop error calculation including total deviation is supported through any one of three methods, based on a user-defined tolerance. To ensure repeatability and measurement consistency, engineers can specify within INtools the test equipment required for calibration and can view equipment details in the Calibration Results report.

O&M Support Expanded in Wiring Module

The Cable Drum feature allows engineers to assign drums (spools) in the plant for cable pulling tasks. Both existing allocations and new spool assignments are supported. The Cable Routing feature enables users to create a flexible data set documenting plant cabling, starting at the trunk level with wiring tray assignments. The features help users plan cabling tasks, determine lengths for procurement and optimize cable spool use.

Fieldbus engineering and operational support is significantly expanded in the Wiring module. The new features help instrument engineers keep pace with advanced bus technology while meeting everyday operational requirements. Adding an increased level of detail for installation, retrofits and maintenance, new fieldbus features include home run cable icons, panel strip and plug-and-socket reports and a separate I/O card definition window that shows the segment name. Segments under construction are easily identified in the module's Segment Manager if the selected segment is not connected to a control system.

Database Features Add Flexibility

To help customers stay current with improved database features and to simplify administration, INtools 5.2 supports Microsoft(r) SQL Server(r) 2000 as well as Oracle(r) 8i and 8.1 (in version 5.2.3). Users can also work with more than one database and select a data source from a list during login. The new database features provide more options to support the INtools data-centric approach to life cycle instrumentation engineering.
