New Spicer ViewCafe 1.4 Lays the Groundwork for the Future with Powerful Web TechnologiesViewCafe 1.4 incorporates leading Web technologies that are specified by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and by businesses around the world.
KITCHENER, ON - July 5, 2001 - Spicer Corporation, a leading developer of client-and server-based document visualization and collaborative review products, continues to answer the call for technological standardization in Web-based software with the release of ViewCafe 1.4. This latest release of ViewCafe incorporates the best of today's Web technologies, such as XML, XGL, Java 2 and XML over HTTP architecture. The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) specifies the use of many of these technologies, which continue to gain acceptance within software applications worldwide. By adopting standardized technologies for ViewCafe, Spicer Corporation ensures that customers can leverage benefits such as interoperability and continuing evolution within the products. The efforts to enhance interoperability will not only help users work better with various Spicer products and with integrator solutions, but also simplify the integration process itself. Enhancing the evolution of products with standardized Web technologies gives customers the benefit of being able to build even better solutions with products such as ViewCafe, without disrupting the functionality that already exists within their integrated solutions. "Our overall Web strategy includes implementing technologies that provide our customers with leading edge Web solutions that are easy to grow with and easy to integrate within their organizations and with their business partners," said Shamir Somani, ViewCafe product manager. "We believe that this strategy will raise the level of interoperability among Spicer products to provide the best document visualization and collaboration solutions for all levels of a business." ViewCafe uses powerful Java 2 technology that works with any standard Web browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. Java 2 technology enables functions such as full resolution printing, ISO-compliant print banners, client-side rendering, and local caching of the Java applet. The Java 2 engine is further complemented with an XML over HTTP architecture that offers fast and robust information transfers across complex systems such as multiple firewalls, proxy servers and demilitarized zone (DMZ) configurations. Markups created in ViewCafe are saved in XML-based XMS files. Since XML was designed for sharing information, XML markups created in ViewCafe can not only be read by other ViewCafe clients, but also in other Spicer products such as Imagenation and Image a*X - providing a high level of interoperability among the Spicer family of products. Fully scalable, ViewCafe is capable of load sharing to evenly distribute the workload across as many server machines as required to ensure that all users can quickly access and collaboratively review documents and drawings. Moreover, intellectual property is always safe since the ViewCafe server streams documents in a compressed format that can only be viewed by the ViewCafe client. Users cannot alter the original document, nor can they save the file in its native format. ViewCafe is available with several flexible pricing models including fixed concurrent pricing, OEM pricing and ASP/portal pricing.
