Bentley Commences Phase One of MicroStation V8 Beta ProgramBentley's largest and most thorough beta-test program includes application-migration lab for Bentley SELECT subscribers and registered third-party developersEXTON, PA - March 1, 2001 - Bentley Systems, Incorporated announced today that the first beta version of MicroStation V8 is available and the first phase of the beta program is underway. More than 200,000 Bentley SELECT subscribers, registered third-party developers, Bentley Integrators, and MicroStation Value-Added Resellers who have access to SELECTservices Online can now take advantage of the largest beta-test program in Bentley's history for this groundbreaking new version of MicroStation. "Meeting the mission-critical needs of our users has always been Bentley's objective, and MicroStation V8 delivers on that promise in several exciting ways," said Bentley CTO Keith Bentley. "MicroStation V8 represents a significant step forward in the evolution of Bentley software and services. The new file format of MicroStation V8 will expand MicroStation's capabilities in many areas, and will ultimately let users add more intelligence to their models, improve MicroStation's reliability and robustness and advance interoperability by allowing direct reading and editing of DWG files. We are delighted to release the first beta version and get the beta program underway." The commencement of phase one of the beta test program marks the completion of the expanded file format, which provides testers a stable basis for creating and using MicroStation designs and models throughout the entire program. Phase 2 begins when all new features of MicroStation V8 are included in the beta release. The beta-test period is anticipated to last for approximately six months, with regular updates to the beta occurring periodically throughout the program. "As an engineering firm that necessarily uses multiple CAD platforms, we look forward to using MicroStation V8's ability to access DWG and DGN data without the hassle of translations," commented Dan Steeley, director of CAD services at LJB, Inc. "The interoperability features will also be invaluable in this process." MicroStation V8 takes advantage of underlying architectural changes, giving users numerous new production and project-level capabilities, and is more tightly integrated with other Bentley engineering information creation applications and Bentley's Viecon engineering information management solutions. "The expanded level capabilities will greatly enhance our ability to communicate with consultants and clients," said Buddy Branham, AIA, CAD development manager for Thompson, Ventulett, Stainback and Associates. "We are already proceeding with rewriting our level standards so that we can take advantage of the new functionality as soon as it is released." MicroStation V8 includes Visual Basic? for Applications (VBA), one of today's most popular programming languages from Microsoft. Using VBA, standard desktop applications are able to interact with MicroStation, increasing user productivity. The simplicity and wide availability of VBA tools provide MicroStation V8 users with more and easier customization than ever before. MicroStation V8 combines the strongest features of the MicroStation Development Language (MDL), MicroStation BASIC and MicroStation V8's JMDL-based "DGN Package." Because the tools utilized by Visual Basic are virtually unlimited, developers and users alike now have much greater flexibility. The beta version of MicroStation V8 is available by direct download from SELECTservices Online or on CD-ROM through Bentley's MySELECT CD service. Application Migration LabTo augment the beta program, Bentley is establishing an Application Migration Lab at its corporate headquarters to assist Bentley SELECT subscribers and registered third-party developers in the migration of applications from previous MicroStation versions to MicroStation V8. Bentley will provide current versions of MicroStation V8 and the assistance of core Bentley developers to address questions as they arise during the migration process. http://www.bentley.com/developer/01v8port/applform.htm About BentleyFounded in 1984, Bentley Systems, Incorporated is a premier technology supplier dedicated to improving the process of designing, building and operating permanent assets such as buildings, roadways, manufacturing facilities and utility and telecommunications networks.
