Heron Technologies Releases WATT v 1.0

HENGELO, Netherlands - February 20, 2001 - Heron-Technologies, a young provider of mechanical engineering software, released WATT Mechanism Design Tool 1.0.

"WATT was designed from a specific mode of thought. Why not start with the desired result, instead of working your way through trial and error processes to end with a moderate design? Stuck in existing design methodologies, we don't use what's really important: the design intent." says Harry Draijer, CEO of Heron-Technologies.

WATT Mechanism Design Tool is a new software package from Heron-Technologies. WATT is a unique conceptual design tool focused on mechanism and linkage design. The product incorporates Heron's own behavioral modeling technology. WATT puts the engineer in charge and invents mechanisms on command. Heron's software is easy to use with every command just one click away. No stacking dialogs, no crawling through menus. Therefore WATT sports a single window user interface. Important information is always visible. User intervention is always allowed which enables a very interactive working method. Start, stop, change, optimize etc. WATT invents 4-bar, 5-bar, 6-bar and 8-bar mechanism configuration types. WATT is a standalone package and can be used on any Windows personal computer. "We give conceptual design new meaning. Terms like 'conceptual design' and 'behavioral modeling' are easily used for marketing purposes. However the real performance of conceptual design software is quite disappointing. Most software packages used for conceptual design still assist in analyzing, optimizing and repositioning, instead of providing new solutions. This also applies on available software on dynamics or kinematics, witch are used to analyze the behavior of a mechanism. However, to start with, the Engineer has to 'invent' a mechanism before he can analyze it. This is not a trivial task. With available methods and handbooks this can take several days if not weeks.

"The Generating Kernel, the core of our products, enables WATT Mechanism Design Tool to solve this problem. For example: From specification of the required movement and constraints on pivot locations, transmission angle and dimensions, WATT searches and finds a variety of solutions within minutes. The Engineer can interactively set specifications, evaluate the offered solutions, add or relax constraints. Instead of painstakingly trying to find one mechanism that might work, the engineer has enough solutions and can focus on integration of the mechanism into the total product."

About the Generating Kernel

It took the founders of Heron-Technologies six years of research and development to create the breakthrough Generating Technology. WATT uses this Generating Technology to search for solutions, not using a limited database, but the rules of physics and kinematics. The Generating Technology cuts through the trial and error struggle, usually encountered in the Engineering Phase of product design. Straight from a sketch of the constraints it generates fully detailed solutions. This drastically reduces time spent on dreary recalculation and remodeling.

The Generating Technology is especially suited for use in behavioral modeling techniques and conceptual design. "This technology will serve as a Generating Kernel in all our future products. Unlike other behavioral modeling techniques our Generating Kernel provides solutions from scratch. No initial concepts are needed. Software equipped with our Generating Kernel enables users to reduce cost and time-to-market drastically." says Draijer. The Generating Kernel can be used to tackle almost any engineering problem. It is just a matter of time before implementation in all kinds of CAE software takes place.
