Competitors from Around the World Vie for Best Product Design in Alias|Wavefront

IBM Competition Winners To be Announced March 19 - Still Time to Enter

TORONTO, CANADA -February 2, 2001 - Ideas from professional and student product designers around the world will soon be judged by a jury of internationally recognized design and technology leaders in the upcoming Alias|Wavefront IBM Design Competition. Competitors have until February 19, 2001 to complete their entries.

Up to $70,000 USD is expected to be awarded in prizes and cash on March 28 at the Design Exchange in Toronto, including $10,000 in cash to the first place winner. Competitors are challenged to project 5 to 10 years into the future and express their personal vision of interaction with computers, assessing the overall impact of emerging technologies, new forms of interaction, utility and lifestyle changes.

The competition is sponsored by Alias|Wavefront and IBM, and endorsed by The International Council of Societies of Industrial Designers (ICSID), Helsinki, Finland. Designs must be created in Alias|Wavefront StudioTools software.

According to Wayne Flaggs, vice president, sales and marketing, IBM IntelliStation workstations, IBM's sponsorship of the design competition was an easy choice. "The IBM IntelliStation combined with Alias|Wavefront StudioTools software provides these industrial design competitors with the best platform available today to help them project the computing devices of tomorrow," he said.

Judges for the competition include:

  • Bill Buxton, Chief Scientist of Alias|Wavefront and Silicon Graphics, Inc.,
  • Bob Brunner, Principal, Pentragram, USA,
  • Dr. Peter Zec, Managing Director, Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen,
  • Leimei Julia Chiu, Director of Global Networks & Marketing, International Design Center NAGUYA Inc.,
  • David Hill, Manager of Design, IBM Personal Systems Group.
