Wire Harness Software, EMbassy v3.0 Immediately Available

Rectangular wire bundles, write API, and large model performance enhancements empower engineers to further automate their wire harness design process.

WESTBOROUGH, MA - January 9, 2001 - Linius Technologies, Inc. today began shipping EMbassy v3.0, the newest release of the company's wire harness design software. EMbassy v3.0 provides major customer-driven enhancements that enable electromechanical engineers to design and document wire harness and cable systems using a 3D model. Key innovations include performance boosts for large assemblies, a write API enabling end-user customization and support for rectangular wire bundles or channel cross sections.

According to Tim Alibozek, Linius Technologies President, "Continual communication with our user base enables Linius to target updates and upgrades to EMbassy where the industry needs them most. When we found that larger and larger assemblies were being tackled by our users, we focused on increasing performance in that area. With v3.0, we've accomplished major enhancements in this and other areas."

New for EMbassy v3.0

  • Rectangular Wire Bundles. With the additional capability to display wire bundles as rectangular cross sections, EMbassy v3.0 provides a realistic 3D depiction of all types of harness and cable cross sections. In addition to controlling the default channel size and surface offset the user can now specify a rectangular cross section and choose from a variety of packing algorithms. Precise control of the rectangular channel shape is provided by an enhanced manipulator that controls both control point location and orientation.

 

  • Performance Tuning. Wire harnesses are contained in single subassemblies or often spread throughout an entire large system. On these large systems maximum performance is critical since large amounts of detailed information are required to fully specify a wire harness. EMbassy's VRML based viewing technology provides excellent large assembly viewing and with EMbassy v3.0, new enhancements have been added to further maximize system performance:
    • Show/Hide functionality has been expanded to include all EMbassy objects.
    • Wires can be viewed as lines, removing the overhead of the actual diameter sweeps. 
    • Complexity of circular objects can be controlled globally. 
    • Routing performance has been improved by 4x. 
    • File Open times improved by 25%.

     

  • Write API. EMbassy v3.0 expands on the currently available read API that is used to create configurable design rule checks by offering a write API. Users can now programmatically add and modify EMbassy objects and create custom functions to meet their process requirements.

EMbassy Overview EMbassy automates the wire harness design processes by taking a 3D model from a CAD package such as Solid Edge or Pro/Engineer and net list information from a schematic or from/to list. Using this data as a basis, the user defines harness paths in the 3D model, routes wires and performs design rule checks. Following the 3D design, EMbassy produces 2D nailboard and specification drawings, wire run lists and bill of materials.

Since EMbassy's introduction 3 years ago, users have derived many benefits from its ability to create a virtual prototype of a harness within their 3D model. EMbassy enables the prototype harness to be ready for installation into the machine at an earlier stage in the manufacturing process. Other advantages of using EMbassy, are the automatic calculation of wire lengths and bundle diameters and the creation of a complete bill of material. Before EMbassy, the harness design process required taking measurements of the prototype machine with a tape measure, manually adding up lengths of wire and counting components for the bill of material. This process introduced human error, resulting in corrections that had to be made late in the design process. EMbassy removes this human error by calculating the lengths and creating the bill of material from the 3D harness design. Because the harness design is more accurate, the harnesses fit on the first try.

All customers with current maintenance contracts have been shipped an EMbassy v3.0 upgrade kit. EMbassy is available directly from Linius Technologies and from select resellers worldwide. EMbassy is priced locally in the US and internationally.
