Edinburgh University increases its Solid Edge 3D solid modelling CAD seat count to 100CAMBERLEY, UK - 21 August 2000 - Edinburgh University's School of Mechanical Engineering has recently added to its existing installation of Unigraphics Solutions' Solid Edge 3D mechanical CAD software to bring the number of Solid Edge 'seats' in use there to 100. The university originally selected Solid Edge to replace its previous 2D drafting system and has used the 3D part and assembly modelling features of the software since then to teach undergraduates modern CAD techniques. The network of PCs currently running Solid Edge is also used extensively by students for their individual project work. An increasing demand from students for time with Solid Edge led to the university's decision to increase the number of seats available to them. Frank Mill, senior lecturer in mechanical engineering at the university, says, "We realised some time ago that 3D solid modelling was rapidly replacing the 2D-only drafting systems in industry, so it was essential that we were able to provide our students with the tools that they would be encountering in the workplace when they graduated. We selected Solid Edge because of its familiar Windows user interface, its extensive modelling capabilities and above all, its ease of use. With its on-line tutorials, we found Solid Edge to be very easy to learn and to use, which is an important consideration in an environment like a university where there is a transient user population." In addition to savings in the time required to modify and document designs through the powerful 3D part and assembly modelling capabilities of Solid Edge, students also benefit from the seamless integration of Solid Edge with third party specialised applications through Unigraphics Solutions' Solid Edge Voyager Partners programme. At Edinburgh these applications include Working Model for mechanical motion analysis, Ansys for finite element analysis and EdgeCAM for the generation of NC machine tool-path programs from 3D Solid Edge models.
