New 3D Technology Drives VectorWorks Future Development Company remains impervious to "kernel wars"COLUMBIA, Maryland - July 27, 2000 - In order to retain a more competitive edge, Nemetschek North America today announced plans to improve the 3D capabilities of VectorWorks, the company's flagship CAD product. Fortifying this new strategy is Nemetschek N.A.'s licensing agreement with Solid Modeling Solutions for its SMLib product, an advanced geometry and topology kernel and an alternative to ACIS and Parasolid. In the wake of the recent, controversial sale of Spatial Technologies' core product, ACIS, to Dassault Systems of France, Nemetschek N.A. proceeds undeterred with its current 3D plans for VectorWorks. VectorWorks will prosper from the stability offered by SMLib while other companies rely their products' fates on the consequences of this sale. Sean Flaherty, Chief Technology Officer for Nemetschek N.A., stated, "One of the principal reasons we elected to license SMLib was the fact that the co-author of the seminal book on NURBS is a member of their technology team. This expertise ensures that our future versions will possess a more robust 3D technology since the SMLib kernel will function as the basis for all of VectorWorks' curve technology." Company officials acknowledge that future releases will provide enriched 3D capabilities comprised of NURBS, curves and surfaces. Furthermore, VectorWorks will boast a larger geometric vocabulary making its 3D technology even more competitive in the CAD industry. The SMLib technology will further strengthen the VectorWorks engine, increasing the productivity of all users designing in 3D. In addition to the betterment of VectorWorks' 3D capabilities, its family of add-on products will also reap the benefits of the new technology. Robert Anderson, Vice President of the Integrated Products Group stated, "VectorWorks' improved solids capabilities will enhance our ability to deliver advanced design applications in the future." Nemetschek NA (formerly Diehl Graphsoft) is a wholly owned subsidiary of European software giant Nemetschek AG. A global leader in design technologies, Nemetschek NA has developed CAD software for the personal computer since 1985. Its flagship product, VectorWorks, is the leading software for the Macintosh and an emerging leader for the Windows platform. VectorWorks is available in more than 85 countries and translated into 14 languages.
