New Drawings in  IntelliCAD

When you start a new drawing in IntelliCAD the default is to begin using a prototype drawing that is configured with all the basic settings that you want the majority of your drawings to inherit.

Select File > New and a New Drawing Wizard opens. The first selection is to use a template (aka prototype) or create a create and entirely new drawing.

Using a template means that your drawing can be pre-configured  with layers, styles, limits and even drawing elements already defined. Creating an entirely new drawing is starting with no settings at all, which is useful for defining drawing or even prototypes that you can be sure are carrying no excess baggage.

If you select to use a template, the next dialog prompts you for the name of the template drawing. A template must be a DWG file. By default it is ICAD.DWG. You can use the browse button to select another template on which to base your new drawing.

Off on a tangent now... You can change your template in two ways. First you can change ICAD.DWG to suit your own requirements and continue to use it as your default template. Otherwise you can set IntelliCAD to use a different default. Select Tools > Options. Go to the Prototype Drawing: text box (see, even Visio can't decide whether it is a template or a prototype!) and enter the path and filename of your chosen one. Fortunately there is a Browse button there to make selection easier.

The last step of the New Drawing Wizard is to click OK. The new drawing you are now working in has no name and is configured exactly as you template was. The template remains unchanged, no matter what you do to your new drawing.

This new drawing process only occurs when you select File > New from the top menu. If you click the New Drawing icon in the toolbar a new drawing is open instantly using the default template.

When you go to Save your new drawing the default save folder is completely unrelated to the location of the template drawing (although they could be set to be related). But that is another story.
