Toolbar Customization
in IntelliCAD
Peter
Coburn, Chris Ainsworth & Lisa PrestonMany users are adopting IntelliCAD as a second (or third or
fourth or twentieth) seat to their existing complement of AutoCAD licenses. Our tips are
aimed at helping these users to customize IntelliCAD 98 to present a familiar
interface and command set.
The Toolbar tab of the IntelliCAD 98 Customize command allows the
user to create or modify existing toolbars by the "drag and drop" method.
To create a new toolbar, simply select the
category of existing toolbars that you wish to use and drag (click and hold down the left
mouse button) the desired button from the listed buttons in the dialogue box to a vacant
area of your drawing screen. A new toolbar will be created containing the new button.
To add another button to an existing find
the button required from the appropriate category and drag it into the target toolbar. The
target toolbar can be either docked or floating.
As you drag a button into an existing
toolbar a black bar will appear next to the button nearest your cursor, the new button
will be dropped on the opposite side of this bar.

You can add buttons as a flyout to an
existing button in a toolbar by clicking on the "Insert as flyout" check box.
The dropped button will then be created as a flyout beneath that button.
IntelliCAD includes some custom buttons
which require the command to be defined behind their click action. These are under the
Custom Toolbar category and can be dragged and dropped as previously described.
If you need to re-define the command that is
behind each button. Click on the button to be changed and enter the Tooltip
in the appropriate edit box. Add the Help String and finally the command
itself. If you wish this new command to cancel the previous command dont forget to
add the ^C^C^C prefix to the command.
OK, ^C is the cancel command, but why three
of them? New commands that you add to menus and toolbars should always commence by
canceling any command that might already be in progress (unless they can be satisfactorily
initiated while another command is in progress). Because commands can have nested levels,
it may be necessary to cancel out of more than one level. In IntelliCAD, the maximum
depth of command nesting is three levels. By prefacing a new command with three ^Cs, you
can be sure that you will always be completely out of any command that could possibly be
in progress before starting a new command.
After your toolbar(s) has been created or
customized to your liking, select the Close button. By clicking on the
Close
button IntelliCAD will write the toolbar definitions into the Windows registry.

To give the newly defined toolbar a name,
right click in the toolbar. A list of all the toolbars will appear. At the bottom of the
list Toolbar-1 is the default name for the new toolbar. Select Toolbars
from this menu to display the Toolbar dialogue box, scroll down and select the
Toolbar-1
item and type in your preferred name in the Toolbar Name edit box and
OK.
Importing Toolbars
Locate the directory that contains relevant *.mnu file and bitmap files (only if you have created you own) and add this directory to
the IntelliCAD search path at Tools
> Options.
Select Customize and
the Toolbar tab then the Import
button. Check the Append
to existing Toolbars box. Browse and open the menu file containing the Toolbars.
Close Customize and re-arrange the toolbars around your drawing editor.
Unfortunately, toolbars can not be exported.
This means that when you install an upgrade for IntelliCAD these customizations are lost.
If the Reset button is used while in the Customize
command then all toolbars are also lost, although a warning gives you a chance to reverse
an errant mouse click.
