IntelliCAD Aliases

Peter Coburn, Chris Ainsworth & Lisa Preston

Many users are adopting IntelliCAD as a second (or third or fourth or twentieth) seat to their existing complement of AutoCAD licenses. Our tips are aimed at helping these users to customize IntelliCAD 98 to present a familiar interface and command set.

One of the most used features of any proficient CAD user are the Alias or Hotkey commands that represent a shortcut key to a full command.

The assignment, or re-assignment, of aliases from inside IntelliCAD is done from the Customize command. Type in customize at the command line, select Tools > Customize or place your pointer arrow over any toolbar button and click on the right mouse button.

This command displays a dialog box with four tabs across the top (Menu, Toolbars, Keyboard and Aliases); click on the Aliases tab. A list of the pre-defined Aliases will be displayed on the left-hand list box, while in the right hand list box is a list of all the available IntelliCAD commands.

The Customize dialog open at the Alias tab
Tools... > Customize then select the Alias tab to quickly and easily define your own shortcuts. Then close and use them immediately.

Both lists are in alphabetical order so it is very easy to scroll down the list and view the default settings. Another quick method is to click on the first Alias (3A) then key the first letter of the Alias command you wish to view. The list will scroll directly to the first occurrence of that Alias’s character.

Create a New Alias

Click on the New button. Enter the shortcut key combination in the Alias edit box at the bottom left of the displayed dialogue box. From the list of available commands on the right-hand list box select (or highlight) the command to be assigned to your new Alias and click Assign.

Delete an Alias

Click on the required Alias in the left-hand list box and click on the Delete button. The deletion of an Alias definition may be necessary if you have an existing LISP defun with the same name. As IntelliCAD gives preference to Aliases any clashes may need to be rectified by removing the Alias.

Import an ACAD.PGP file

Click on the Import button, change the ‘Files of Type’ list to *.PGP and then browse to and open your existing ACAD.PGP file. The definitions contained within your own ACAD.PGP will then be added to the existing Aliases, any Aliases which are not redefined by the Import of this file will remain.

Export Aliases

Click on the Export button and nominate a file name, either *.PGP or the default *.ICA file type. As the definition of the IntelliCAD Aliases are saved in the Windows Registry, you will need to Export these changes to a saved file for transport to another installation or prior to an upgrade. Once transported or the upgrade is complete then Import this file as described above.

Reset

To revert back to the installed default Aliases click on the Reset button.

To make your changes effective click on the Close button. By clicking on the Close button IntelliCAD will re-define the list of Aliases required into the Windows registry, depending on the speed of your computer this may take a few seconds. There is no need to restart IntelliCAD or REINIT the Alias file, once the Customize command has been Closed then modifications are available immediately.
