IntelliCAD 5.1 Update Announced

11 Jan 2005 - This week the IntelliCAD Technical Consortium announced the release of IntelliCAD 5.1. At first glance this seems to be a hasty update to IntelliCAD 5 technology. However IntelliCAD 5 was released to developers in October 2005 - around 4 months ago! How time flies. 

The 5.1 update is timely and addresses a number of problems that users may have experienced. ITC president Arnold van der Weide stressed that with IntelliCAD 5, the ITC has committed to providing regular updates of which 5.1 is the first.

A factor that is sometimes lost with IntelliCAD when considering the timeliness of updates is the path of technology for source to end user. The ITC releases technology to consortium members who then create and market the final commercial software for end users. This is why there are so many different "brands" of IntelliCAD.

Each commercial developer adds its own touch to IntelliCAD, such as language customisation and integration with independently-developed applications.

The extra development stage between ITC release and commercial developer release explains the time lag between the first ITC release announcement and the availability of software "on the shelf".

IntelliCAD is a rare case in the software world. The foundation source code is managed by a group of companies organised as a not-for-profit consortium. This group is perpetually licensed by Microsoft (the code owner) to manage all aspects of the code. The participating companies all contribute to the development effort each according to its capacity or desire and each pays a fee to me part of the group. Group membership also entitles participants to a range of benefits 

IntelliCAD 5.1 addresses the following critical bugs...

• Fixes a problem with opening and saving files with complex linetypes.
• Fixes a problem with dimensions seeming to move on save.
• Fixes a problem where saving a drawing with an image resulted in the image not being saved in the output file.
• Fixes a problem with saving solid hatches.
• Fixes crash trimming Heavy (pre R14) PLINEs.
• Fixes crash with BHATCH/Select Area in the attached drawing.
• Fixes the failure of IntelliCAD to export SVG format files.
• Fixes two problems related to SORTENTSTABLE creation.
  • SORTENTSTABLES are being created when they should not be.
  • Empty SORTENTSTABLES are being created when they do exist and are not empty.
• When saving a file DWGdirect was using the wrong set of color indices which cause the value of Ccolor in the drawing header to be wrong.
• Fix problems with Layouts being saved properly.
• Fix problems with entity ordering on drawing load.
• Fix crash editing pre-R14 polylines.
• Change all project settings to use the same common language runtime.
• Fix random crashes that occurred when moving the mouse during viewport creation.
• Fix problem with Xrefs in model space viewports not respecting VPLayer frozen layer settings
• Fix problems with non-plan view images being saved properly.
• Fix problems with binary data in Xdata not being saved properly.
• Fix problems with hatch scale not being saved properly.

Individual commercial developers will make update packages available in due course. Some 5.1 technology may need to be further modified by individual developers and this will take time. For update details IntelliCAD 5 users should contact the support channel of their specific commercial developer.
